What information do we collect and why?
We need to record your name, date of birth, contact details and whether or not you are a Community Union member (or related to a member) when you contact us in order for us to provide you with the contact details of the recommended law firm. We use this for our record keeping and we pass the reference number that we allocate you to Community Union in order for them to administer your enquiry with the law firm that Community recommends, should you choose to instruct them.
Sensitive Personal Data
Your union membership, and certain other data such as medical information, is classified as “sensitive personal data” by the Data Protection Act 1998 and we need your consent to process it in the manner set out in this policy.
Who do we share this information with?
Please note that we do NOT contact or pass on your details to the law firm Community recommends to you. Should you wish your enquiry to be actioned by the recommended law firm you must contact them. Because strict time limits may apply you should contact the recommended law firm immediately. Please note that we only share your reference number with Community Union.
We may also share your personal information with service providers acting on our behalf who will only use the information to provide that service. However, we will retain control of your data and any service provider that we use must act in accordance with our instructions.
In some circumstances, we may have to disclose your personal information by law, because a court or the police or other law enforcement agency has asked us for it.
How to get copies of or amend the information we have collected
You may request details of the personal information that we hold about you under data protection laws. If you would like a copy of the information held about you please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone us on 0800 077 8841. A small fee (up to £10) will be charged for providing copies of personal information.
If you think any information we have about you is incorrect or incomplete, please write to us or email us as soon as possible. We will correct or update any information as soon as we can.
We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online, including locked cabinets and electronic password protection.
